most of my poems don’t have real titles, and i usually just call them “poem -something” if i type them up. This one was “poem saved” until i entered it into a competition on poetry.com. It’s so far in the semi-final and is being published in a poetry.com book of poems called Eternal Portraits. I’ve been invited to a symposium to read it out and get a big silver bowl for my trouble, but it’s in Washington…so i can’t go. It’s not even one of the poems that i think is that good, but i was limited to lines and characters for the competition…anyway, here goes…saved…
You saved me!
Through the high pitched ringing
Louder and louder as I lie still
Stuck, and safe in my bed,
but somewhere else in my head.
Fear was there,
but off in the distance somewhere,
When I remembered your face
And held it there, smiling
While the ringing rose and screamed
and you smiled.
You didn’t change,
Reform into the nightmare around us.
You stayed there, smiling
Until I broke the screams
and woke.
You saved me.
